Formerly, Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi

Delhi School of Professional Studies & Research felicitated Professor Abad Ahmad, formerly, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, and the Pro Vice – Chancellor, University of Delhi by conferring Life Time Achievement Award for his distinguished service and contribution to the promotion of Management Education & Profession in India on Teachers’ Day, September 5, 2010.
Professor Abad Ahmad was felicitated by Director, Executive Director and the Chairman of the Institution by highlighting his academic background and distinctions achieved in the academic field, and the contributions made by him in strengthening the Management Profession in India. His services to the University of Delhi first as Professor, Head & Dean, then as Director, University of Delhi South Campus (UDSC), and later as Pro Vice – Chancellor of University of Delhi were par excellence.
In between these assignments at Delhi University, Professor Abad Ahmad joined Management Development Institute (M.D.I.), Gurgaon as Executive Director. During his regime, the M.D.I. started P.G.D.M. full-time programme of two years duration which is still continuing with full vigour and vitality.
Professor Abad Ahmad in his observations traced the role and the importance of the school teachers right from the primary up to the secondary level, and then highlighted the role of Professor Q. H. Farooqi, the founder, Head & Dean, Faculty of Commerce & Management, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh under whose guidance Professor Abad Ahmad completed his Ph.D degree.
Later, he proceeded for Post-Doctoral work on Case Methods in Management on Canadian Govt. Comonwealth Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He was advised by the Dean of the Business School to join the second year MBA course to learn the Case Methods directly as a student, on completing which he was awarded the MBA degree in one year.
He was then trained in writing and teaching through Case Methods and field based empirical research methods in close association with Prof. Craig Lundberg. He found the case method a totally different paradigm of learning, which was highly participative and student centered, based on the philosophy of learning by doing. There was great emphasis on developing analytical and decision making skills, and application of knowledge to practical situations, thus filling the gap between theory and practice.
His experience of the MBA programme at the University of Western Ontario inspired him to think of developing an MBA course in Indian Universities, and he wrote to ten Indian Universities about his proposal. Professor A. Dasgupta invited him to join as Reader in the Dept. of Business Management at the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University in 1962 and gave him full support to design and launch the first MBA course in Delhi University in 1967.
Later Prof. Abad Ahmad went to attend the International Teachers programme at the Harvard University, and the Advanced Management Programme in Management Education at the Stanford University. He was also a Visiting Professor at the Indiana University, USA and the University of California, Los Angeles.
In his concluding remarks he implored upon the younger generation of budding managers in the making at our Institution that the opportunities for them are immense which encompass the whole world provided they are able to acquire the requisite knowledge, skill, positive attitude and dynamism in their personality. He wished each one of them a very bright and prosperous future.
He also placed on record his grateful thanks to the organizers of the function, namely, the students, the Teachers, the Director, and the Management of the Institution for doing this good turn to him.
