World Environment Day 2011

 

Our 9 students, Mr. Amrit Preet Singh, Mr. Deeapk Singh, Mr. Ashwani Khandelwal, Ms. Rashmeet Kaur Kohli, Ms. Shweta Pathak, Mr. Sarvesh Giri, Mr. Gajendra Jaiswal, Mr. Soorya, and Mr. Praveen alongwith one faculty member Ms. Sima Singh participated in ‘Walkathon’ on June 5, 2011 on the occasion of World Environment Day at India Gate, New Delhi. The programme ‘Walkathon’ was organized by Department of Environment, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, New Delhi. The function was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Environment and Forests Mr. Jairam Ramesh.  Delhi Minister of Social Welfare Kiran Walia also participated in the walkathon and appealed to the people to keep the environment clean and green. She said plants and trees provide shelter, food, medicines and water to people and also help maintain a balanced global climate. Therefore, she said, everyone must work to conserving and protecting them. Many people of all age groups came from different parts of Delhi and NCR to participate in that event. Media personnel were also there to make coverage of the event. Registration of participants get started at 6.00am, the department also provided T-shirts, caps and snacks for this programme.

The motto behind ‘Walkathon’ was to make general people aware to save the earth and the environment wherein they live and the focus was also on how they may contribute to save valued resources like energy, water, forest, etc., which are required for sustainable development of all of us. The Walkathon flagged off from India Gate at 6.30 am and went on till Rafi Marg covering a distance of three kilometres during the event before returning to the India Gate lawns. Many of the participants including us held aloft banners and placards which had emblazoned on them slogans exhorting people to lead an environment-friendly life. Some of the messages read “save trees, conserve forests”, “trees are our lives”, “water is life”, “save fuel, save energy” and “don't burn leaves and garbage”.
